QMusic Announce Finalists for Album of the Year and People’s Choice Awards
After weeks of voting by the public, the shortlist for the best venues and festivals in the state have been chosen, while Cub Sport, Holy Holy and others are up for best album.
After another year of fantastic art from the Sunshine State, QMusic is today delighted to announce the 2024 Queensland Music Award’s Album of The Year nominees:
Cub Sport - Jesus at the Gay Bar
Holy Holy - Cellophane
Lastlings - Perfect World
Robert Foster - The Candle and the Flame
Cub Sport’s Jesus at the Gay Bar represents a shift in the iconic Brisbane band’s usual sound, and it has worked for them. Often touted as a perfect pop album, the record will go up against some of the best in the biz like Holy Holy’s Cellophane. On this, the duo once again show that their production skills go unmatched with a tracklist that brings together notes of classic indie, dance and RnB and a stellar lineup of features from Tasman Keith, Darcie Haven, Kwame and more.
Lastlings share the accolade with their album Perfect World that hits quintessential Japanese-inspired modern dance right on its head. As another tough contender, they’ll also share the ring with Robert Forster and his record The Candle and the Flame. The Go-Betweens album has shown that he can stand just fine on his own, with these premium punk-meets-folk tracks.
What’s more, following a statewide poll for music lovers to cast their vote, the finalists for best Metro Venue, Regional Venue and Music Festival have been chosen, as facilitated by Oztix and The Music.
“With over 5,000 votes cast for this year’s choice awards, already the energy for the QMA’s is at a record high,” said Brian Chladil (aka Smash), co-founder, Oztix. “We’ve been proud sponsors of the QMA’s for many years, and love being amongst the incredible emerging and established talent across our state.
“This year will be extra special for us as it marks both 30 years of QMusic and Oztix’s 20th anniversary as Australia’s Largest Independent Ticketing Company. We celebrate this milestone by putting our money where our heart and soul is - re-investing back into our industry with sponsorships and support.”
The People’s Choice Award Metro Venue Of The Year finalists were whittled down to Fortitude Music Hall, Sandstone Point Hotel and the Tivoli - three places where no true Brisbanite can say they haven’t spent a solid evening.
Highlighting our champions of rural touring, the top Regional Venues are decidedly King’s Beach Tavern, Solbar and Miami Marketta, while the iconic Gympie Music Muster, Battle of the ROCK Bands and Tablelands Folk Festival compete for the state’s Best Festival.
Some Queensland venues are ahead of the curb when it comes to equality for all its punters, which is why Brisbane Powerhouse, Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct and Tanks Arts Centre are being honoured as Accessible Venue of the Year finalists.
These nominees join the finalists up for Blues/Roots, Children’s Music, Contemporary Classical & Music For Stage, Country, Electronic, Folk, Heavy, Hip Hop, Indigenous, Jazz, Music For Screen, Pop, Rock, Soul/Funk/RnB, World, Youth, Regional and Video awards for a chance to have their name in the QMA history books on April 17.
Tickets for the 2024 Queensland Music Awards are on sale now. The night of celebration will be held at Fortitude Music Hall on April 17.
